New Hampshire Baseball Quiz

QUESTION 11: Who are the two New Hampshire natives to win the Cy Young award?

ANSWER: Mike Flanagan & Chris Carpenter

Mike Flanagan is a native of Manchester and a graduate of Memorial High School. After high school, he attended the University of Massachusetts, where he compiled a 12-1 pitching record. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both of whom played in the minor leagues, Mike was drafted in 1973 by Baltimore. After three minor league seasons, Flanagan was brought up in 1976, appearing in 20 games. In 1977 and 1978, Flanagan emerged as one of the premier pitchers in the American League, capping his success by winning the Cy Young Award in 1979 with a 23-9 record. He also won a game in the 1979 World Series. Following two sub-par years in the mid-1980s, Flanagan was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays where he compiled a 26-27 record between 1987 and 1990. Released by the Blue Jays in 1990, Flanagan attempted a comeback with the Orioles in 1991-92.

Chris Carpenter was born in Exeter in 1975. Now a resident of Bedford, he graduated in 1993 from Trinity High School in Manchester, where he was a star pitcher and hockey player. His team won the state baseball championship in 1992, and he was named Athlete of the Year as a senior. After three years of minor league ball, the 6'6" Carpenter was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays from AAA Syracuse in May of 1997. After six seasons with Toronto, he missed the 2003 season due to injury. After joining the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004, Carpenter made a strong comeback, winning 51 games in three seasons, including 21 in 2005, when he started the All-Star game and won the Cy Young Award. He pitched in the National League Championship Series in 2005 and 2006, and won Game 3 in the 2006 World Series, helping the Cardinals defeat the Tigers in five games. He finished third in the voting for the 2006 Cy Young Award. Carpenter carries on the tradition of the many powerful pitchers from the Granite State who have made it to the major leagues.
