Bob Tewksbury was born in Concord in 1960 and continues to call New Hampshire's capital city home. After graduating from Merrimack Valley High School, Bob attended college in Florida from 1979 to 1981 before signing a contract with the New York Yankees. Brought up by the Yankees in 1986, Bob had a fine 9-5 rookie season, but slipped to 1-8 in 1987 with the Yankees and the Chicago Cubs. A poor showing combined with injuries resulted in demotion to the minors in 1988, after which Bob was released by the Cubs. He signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and after a fine 1989 in Triple A, he was called up by the Cardinals late in the season, pitching his first major league shutout. After starting 1990 in Louisville, Bob was brought up by St. Louis in June and became the team's outstanding pitcher for the remainder of the season. In August he combined for back-to-back shutouts including a near perfect one hitter against Houston. He had his best seasons in 1991 and 1992, posting records of 16-5 and 17-10. In 1992, he was a member of the All-Star team and his 2.16 earned run average narrowly missed winning the league ERA title. After stints with Texas and San Diego, Bob finished his career with the Minnesota Twins in 1998. Despite setbacks throughout his career, Bob Tewksbury never gave up on himself or his ability to pitch at the major league level.
