ANSWER: Fred Herbert Brown

Fred Brown was born in Ossipee, NH, in 1879. He attended Dartmouth College in 1899-1900 and then played major league baseball briefly with the Boston Nationals, appearing in seven games. In 1902, he appeared in two games with Boston, completing his major league career. The next year, Brown attended Boston University Law School. He was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1907. After serving as Mayor of Somersworth and U.S. District Attorney, he ran for Governor in 1922, winning the general election. He was beaten by Republican John Winant in a re-election bid in 1924. In 1932, Brown was elected to the U.S. Senate from New Hampshire for one term and was then appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Comptroller General of the United States. His political achievements were more distinguished than his major league baseball career, where he was 4 for 20 with 2 rbi.
