New Hampshire Baseball Quiz QUESTION 3: This New Hampshire notable played with the Boston Beaneaters from 1896 to 1900 and was a close friend of Robert Frost. Can you name him? ANSWER: Ted Lewis Born in Wales and raised in Utica, NY, Ted Lewis has an interesting relationship with New Hampshire. Professional baseball player, college professor, and friend of poet Robert Frost, Lewis was President of the University of New Hampshire from 1927 until his death in 1936. After graduating from Williams College in 1896, Lewis had a brief but productive career as a major league pitcher. With the Boston Nationals in 1897 he was 21-12, followed by a superb 26-8 the next season. After two more seasons with the Boston Nationals, he switched to the new Boston American League team. Lewis won the final game of the 1901 season on a shutout, and then announced his retirement from baseball at age 29. Lewis went on to teach at Columbia, Williams, and Yale before serving as President of the University of New Hampshire. He and Robert Frost became close friends and are reputed to have played an occasional game of catch in Lewis's back yard. These men shared two common loves -- baseball and poetry. |
