Beauty Caught and Kept: Benjamin Champney in the White Mountains Benjamin Champney portrayed the White Mountains on canvas for five decades. He also wrote about the New Hampshire landscape he long admired and his work as an artist. In a clear and personable tone, Champney's autobiography, Sixty Years' Memories of Art and Artists, supplemented by articles he produced for Boston and White Mountain newspapers, tells of Champney's adventures in the mountains, the artists he knew, and his affection for the area. Champney's published writings, along with the letters he directed to his friends and family throughout his life, allow us to see new dimensions of his art. In the following selections from the Society's 1997-98 exhibition, Beauty Caught and Kept: Benjamin Champney in the White Mountains, we present Champney's thoughts and paintings together. Whether conveyed through images or words, Champney's enthusiasm for the White Mountains is infectious. Younger visitors will enjoy Champney for Children.
