Isles of Shoal

This group of islands, which is shared between Maine and New Hampshire, is located roughly nine miles from the mouth of the Piscataqua River, and has been home to fishermen, tourists, summer residents, and more recently, religious retreats and scientists since about 1600. In the late 19th century, the Isles of Shoals were known for a colony of writers and artists, and most notably, Celia Thaxter.
