New Hampshire has held presidential primary elections since 1916, and since 1920, New Hampshire's presidential elections have been the first in the nation. However, until 1952, only presidential electors were selected in the primaries. Since 1952, the state's first-in-the-nation presidential primary elections have featured the names of the actual candidates, and the New Hampshire presidential primary had become a major hurdle for candidates seeking office in the White House.
