Old Man of the Mountain

A rocky form at Franconia Notch resembling the profile of a man's face. First discovered by white settlers in 1805, it was later immortalized by 19th-century author Nathaniel Hawthorne in a short story. The Old Man is the official state emblem, a frequent symbol of New Hampshire, and has appeared on the state license plate and a state stamp.
