New Hampshire's first private academy was founded in 1781 and served as a model for future private academies in the Granite State. Throughout the first half of the 19th century, private academies were the only means by which young boys could receive a secondary education. Phillips Exeter is nationally known as one of the premiere prep schools in the United States today.
