1813 Born in Boston, Massachusetts

1830s Worked as a sign and decorative painter in Boston

1839 Opened a studio in Boston, specializing in miniatures

1840 First exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum

1843 First known to have exhibited a White Mountain scene (at Chester Harding’s Boston gallery)

1850 First exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; traveled in Europe

1852 Painted in the Conway, New Hampshire, area during the summer

1855 One of twenty founders of the Boston Art Club

1858 Elected president of the Boston Art Club; first exhibited at the National Academy of Design

1859 Traveled briefly in Europe

1860–91 Maintained studios and taught art classes in both Boston and neighboring Roxbury

1873 Left for two years in Europe, joining other Boston artists in Paris

1891 Died in Roxbury, Massachusetts
