Mount Washington from Sunset Hill
Harrison Bird Brown (1831-1915)
Signed lower right:  HBBrown
Not dated; probably 1860s or 1870s
Oil on canvas, 13 1/4 x 25 inches
John J. and Joan R. Henderson

For four decades Harrison Bird Brown was the most prolific professional landscape painter in Portland, Maine.  Brown drew his subject matter principally from local marine and pastoral scenes, but also traveled to Mount Desert (Maine), Grand Manan (New Brunswick), and Europe.  He made at least one painting trip to the White Mountains annually, for thirty-five years.  The view, looking north across the valley of North Conway, was a favorite of artists and photographers.  Brown's view from Sunset Hill captures the scene from a different vantage point than that popularized by John Frederick Kensett's Mount Washington from the Valley of Conway.  Brown's painting looks directly across the valley toward Mount Washington.
