Discovering and Rediscovering New Hampshire
Since its founding in 1823, the New Hampshire Historical Society has been collecting objects, manuscripts, maps,
photographs, books, and art which help us understand the history of the state. In celebration of its 175th anniversary,
the Society presented an exhibition of objects and words that inspired reflection upon the diverse elements that
make New Hampshire unique. On view from October 10, 1998, through February 28, 1999, the exhibition showcased landscape
paintings, prints, photographs, and drawings by such distinguished artists as Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church,
Jasper Cropsey, Thomas Hill, Edward Hill, David Johnson, Samuel Gerry, James Young, Helen Nicolay, Charles Sawyer,
and Paul Grey. Contemporary works by noted New Hampshire artists Blair Folts, Matthew Smith, and Melissa Miller
were also featured. The exhibition was sponsored by Citizens Bank.
