Lesson Plans - Introduction

[Educational Programs and Resources] [Lessons] [School Programs]

Welcome to the New Hampshire Historical Society's online lesson plans.

These classroom lessons are designed by New Hampshire teachers for New Hampshire teachers. They are adapted from lessons created at summer institutes held annually at the Society. The institutes assist teachers in the implementation of the New Hampshire history curriculum for grades K-12. Written by historian and educator Judith Moyer, the curriculum was published by the New Hampshire Historical Society in two volumes, book 1 for grades K-6 and book 2 for grades 7-12.

We share these resources with you and invite your comments and professional wisdom, through our Teacher Exchange, as you use the curriculum and lessons in your classroom. Each lesson relates to eight focus questions and ten eras featured in the curriculum, as well as New Hampshire Social Studies Standards.

Why Focus Questions?

The eight questions help students and teachers focus learning around ideas that connect facts and events. The questions suggest paths for inquiry and thus are more directive than themes.

Beginning with the general focus questions, teachers and students have the freedom to create more specific questions as they follow inquiry at any level - local, state, or national. Even though the emphasis is on history, by virtue of their design the focus questions also call upon geography, economics, civics, and government.

Why Eras?

Events happen in time. We need to keep time in mind in order to see patterns and to discover possible cause-effect relationships. Eras encourage an awareness of time within manageable increments. Although we do not advocate meaningless lists of dates, we do advocate paying attention to pivotal dates or turning points, general sequence, and clusters of related events within and sometimes across eras.
