Transcript of letter sent to Mr. and Mrs. Pierce by A. D. Dearborn and H. N. Dearborn, January 7, 1853

“Dear Mr. & Mrs. Pierce,
                                             Dear Friends,

We have read to day of the loss of your son at Andover with the most painful feelings. We deeply sympathise with you in the desolation which has so suddenly and unexpectedly blasted the beautiful prospects of the future. The spirit of the dear one is now in a world of light however desolate the hearts of his parents and we can only point to Him who is able & willing to sooth & heal when He has broken and wounded. We wish we could be with you if by our presence a little ___ of the grief which has overwhelmed you could be mitigated.

We remain in the warmest affection
                     Your friends
