Note from the Executive Director
Bill Veillette

Welcome to the first edition of the Society's E-Newsletter. Our goal here is simple. We want to let you know about timely events, give brief updates about what's going on at the Society and around the state, and send advance notice about special offers for members.

The E-Newsletter is a work in progress. Comments and suggestions are always welcome, and we will periodically conduct surveys to learn what works best for you. We'll adjust the content and modify the format as we go along.

If this newsletter does not display properly, click on "View this edition online" located just above this message.

Thanks for letting us communicate with you this way, and, as always, thanks for your membership support.

Mini Exhibition Open at the Society's Museum
Szainer oil painting on canvas

A recent gift of artwork, papers, and photos documenting the life of Armand H. Szainer has greatly enhanced the Society's 20th-century collection. Selected pieces from this gift are now on display in the Museum lobby.

Wes Balla, director of collections and exhibitions, says these pieces "capture the intersection of Jewish culture, the Holocaust, and art in New Hampshire." They also demonstrate Szainer's ability to work with various media and his willingness to experiment with style.

You can read more about this important donation in the printed newsletter due in mailboxes soon. Plan a trip to Concord to see Szainer's work. And, be sure to see the exhibition of photographs by Verner Reed and the extensive display of decorative arts from our collection.

An Object and its Story
Sarah Walker Rolfe Thompson ThimbleWe found this small, intricately engraved silver thimble tucked in a corner of a sewing box donated to the Society. The initials "SW" engraved on the side indicate that it belonged to Sarah Walker Rolfe Thompson of Concord, NH – the mother of Sarah Thompson, Countess Rumford. The engraved rococo decorations and initials lead us to believe this is a rare surviving object from the 1750s although we do not know the maker.

The thimble was one of women's most important possessions as they made most of the clothing and linens for an eighteenth–century New Hampshire household.
