Mystery Stone

What We Know About the Mystery Stone
• In 1872 the stone was found in Meredith • It was encased in clay • The stone is quartzite or mylonite (material probably not originally from New Hampshire) • There is a hole bored through the stone from both ends, with different size bits (1/8” at the narrow end, 3/8” at the broad end) • Each bore is straight, not tapered • Scratches on the stone’s lower bore suggest it was placed on a metal shaft and removed several times • There is a notch or divot in the bore, perhaps a “key” for mounting the stone • No one else has ever reported finding a stone like this in the United States

What We Do Not Know About the Mystery Stone
• Who made it? • Why was the stone made? • When was it made? • How was the stone carved?
