Manuscript Collection The Society's outstanding manuscript collection includes
the papers of New Hampshire notables, such as U.S. Senator and famous orator Daniel Webster,
Mary Baker Eddy,
founder of Christian Science, and Josiah Bartlett, New Hampshire signer of the Declaration of Independence, as
well as diaries, account books, indentures, and business records representing craftsmen, farmers, shopkeepers,
businesswomen, and housewives. Also preserved in our library are corporate and organizational records relating
to various educational, medical, religious, agricultural, industrial, social, and cultural groups. These range
from 18th-century arithmetic copybooks to 20th-century business records. Among the most frequently used manuscript
materials are those relating to the Civil War, in particular the papers of New Hampshire native John Badger Bachelder
(1825-94), appointed by Congress the official historian of the Battle of Gettysburg; William E. Chandler (1835-1917)
lawyer, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of War; and John Parker Hale (1806-73) U.S. District Attorney, U.S. Representative
and Senator, and U.S. Ambassador to Spain.
