Manuscript Sampler

Transcript of passage, with reference to President Thomas Jefferson, from William Plumer's "Repository, Volume V, Scandalous Anecdotes about members of the eighth congress," dated March 1, 1804. From the New Hampshire Historical Society's collection of William Plumer (1759-1850) papers, accession number: 1886-001.

Mr. Hillhouse (a senator from Connecticut) told me this day that at the last session he was dining with Mr. Jefferson at his table and relating an Indian anecdote in which the savage expressed his surprise that the American people who were __?__ were alarmed at an Indian war - The President replied "Why an Indian War is a very alarming thing - I very well remember when I was a boy of 14 or 15 there was an Indian War and it was reported the Indians were coming into that part of the country where I lived and I ran into the woods and dug a hole to hide myself." Mr. H. said had not the President been in his own house he should have replied "That early impressions often continued through life."
