Civil War Photography Exhibition

From June 19, 1999, through February 27, 2000, the Museum of New Hampshire History featured an exhibition of Civil War photographs that vividly depict soldiers from New Hampshire and the world they encountered. Soldiers, Sailors, Slaves, and Ships: The Civil War Photographs of Henry P. Moore, included over 40 photographs taken by this talented New Hampshire photographer.

Artist-Photographer

A Concord photographer who began his career as an artist, Henry P. Moore traveled to visit the Third New Hampshire Regiment to South Carolina and Georgia in 1862 and 1863. On Hilton Head and other sea islands, he captured striking images of soldiers in camp, former slaves at work, Navy warships, and sailors. Moore's Civil War work is unusual in the topics the photographer selected, according to exhibition curator Hilary Anderson. Many photographs of the era are posed studio shots of officers or static renditions of weaponry. "Moore expresses the vulnerability and humanity of people caught up in events beyond their control. These pictures are his legacy," Anderson said.

The museum published a book in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring an essay and commentary by University of New Hampshire Professor W. Jeffrey Bolster, author of Black Jacks, African American Seamen in the Age of Sail. The publication includes 50 of Moore's photographs and a short biography of the photographer. Excerpts from letters and diaries of the era lend insight to the powerful pictures. Order copies of the soft cover book Soldiers, Sailors, Slaves, and Ships: The Civil War Photographs of Henry P.
