Treasures of New Hampshire

Treasures of New Hampshire, an exhibition at the Museum of New Hampshire History, showcased the Society's collections and encouraged visitors to explore the intriguing world of objects made and used by New Hampshire people to decorate their homes and enhance their lives. The exhibition, on view from March 5, 2005, through July 16, 2006, featured a treasure trove of decorative arts.

About the Collections

The New Hampshire Historical Society began collecting family heirlooms and personal memorabilia within a few years of its founding in 1823 as the fifth earliest statewide historical society in the nation. Today, the Society's decorative arts collection -- including furniture, quilts, clocks, silver, pewter, ceramics, and glassware -- numbers more than 6,650 items. Altogether, our museum holdings provide the best resource available anywhere for documenting the changing living conditions, cultural values, and social customs of New Hampshire residents over more than three centuries. To see a collection of comparable historical depth and aesthetic importance, the public would have to visit the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, or the Winterthur Museum in Delaware.

Who Are We?

Founded in 1823, the New Hampshire Historical Society is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and sharing New Hampshire history. The Society serves thousands of children and adults each year through its Museum of New Hampshire History, research library, educational programs, and award-winning publications.
