The Votes Are In!
A Celebration of New Hampshire's Favorite Symbols

The things we love most about New Hampshire were featured in an exhibition at the Museum of New Hampshire History from February 5, 2000, through November 4, 2001.

The Votes Are In! A Celebration of New Hampshire's Favorite Symbols
showcased the winners in the New Hampshire Historical Society's popular vote taken in the fall of 1999, when the public chose their favorite Granite State symbols.

Thanks to Our Sponsors

The Votes Are In! A Celebration of New Hampshire's Favorite Symbols was sponsored by Laconia Savings Bank, Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, and Peerless Insurance. Public Service of New Hampshire participated in the project by supporting the creation by New Hampshire Public Radio of 22 two-minute audio essays about these favorite symbols.

Featured New Hampshire Symbols

The exhibition featured winning symbols ranging from Mount Washington to the Amoskeag Mills, from Lake Winnipesaukee to the Isles of Shoals. Country fairs, covered bridges, and stone walls all made the list, as did the Canterbury Shaker Village and Dartmouth College. Topping the list, to no one's surprise, was the Old Man of the Mountain. The exhibition was a tribute to the lasting icons of this remarkable state in which we live. It provided enticing information about the places we love the most, as well an affectionate tribute to our cherished icons.
