Scope and Content: Orderly book of the 5th Continental Infantry records the march into Canada from New York City of the forces under General John Sullivan. The book breaks off on June 10, 1776 with Sullivan's orders to General Thompson prior to the defeat at Three Rivers. The book resumes on July 2 with Continental forces retreating at Crown Point, NY. The book also contains daily orders from general headquarters as well as brigade and regimental orders. There are also admonitions to troops for disorderly conduct and mistreatment of civilians; details on the extensiveness of sickness; organization of the army (including that Stark made brigade commander on July 20); delivery and distribution of supplies; appointment of guard and fatigue duties from Stark's regiment; numerous courts martial (including that of Colonel Timothy Bedel); and an army and congressional promotions including the promotion of Colonel James Reed instead of Stark to Brigadier General.
