Road to the White House: New Hampshire's Presidential Primary Everyone interested in the political process enjoyed the Museum of New Hampshire History's exhibition exploring New Hampshire's unique role in choosing the United States President. Road to the White House: New Hampshire's Presidential Primary captured memorable moments of the first-in-the-nation primary. Visitors saw political campaign advertising material and intriguing photographs, including Eisenhower waving from an open car and John Kennedy greeting voters at a dogsled race. The exhibition was on view from October 10, 1999, through March 5, 2000. Thanks to Our Sponsors Road to the White House: New Hampshire's Presidential Primary was presented in collaboration with the Library and Archives of New Hampshire's Political Tradition. The exhibition was made possible by major support from Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, with additional funding by Orr & Reno, PA; Clark Hill Sugary; the New Hampshire Humanities Council; the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation; and Historic Properties. Exploring the Presidential Primary This exhibition looked at the hopes and possibilities of the political process. It also captured moments of gritty reality faced by candidates, as in the image of Mario Cuomo announcing that he would withdraw from the race. The show explored the image and purpose of the New Hampshire primary, both here and across America. It looked at the impact our primary has on national political issues and tackled the tough question of whether New Hampshire serves well as a mirror of the country at large. The show encompassed the origins of the primary, the stories of long shot candidates who did well here, and the political industry in New Hampshire. Building Awareness Road to the White House was a retrospective of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, and a reminder of how important it is for us to participate in the political process, by voting, going to town meeting, and listening to candidates. This colorful look at New Hampshire's distinctive role in the presidential primary added to our appreciation for the state's special role in selecting American presidents and, at the same time, reinforced the importance of our own participation in the political process.
