Using the Library

ENTRANCES
  • All library visitors must stop at the reception desk upon entering the building. The receptionist will provide information about the building, facilities, availability of parking, use of lockers, and other procedures to be followed by visitors. Library users will be given a registration card to complete and turn in at the Reference Desk in the library. The receptionist will also ask if the visitor is a member and, if not, will explain the benefits of membership, invite the visitor to join, and complete the membership enrollment, should the visitor decide to join.
  • The use of lockers will be mandatory for all researchers. All bags, purses, books, food, drink, and like materials must be left outside the building or in the lockers. Although there is normally a staff member present at the front door, the NHHS is not responsible for items belonging to patrons.
  • Patrons may eat at the tables in the staff lounge on the second floor, unless the doors are closed for a meeting.
  • No smoking is allowed within any NHHS building, or at the entrances to NHHS buildings.
  • Coats, umbrellas and other outerwear must be left in the coat room, or in a locker.
READING ROOM
  • The only items that may be brought into the reading room are pencils, blank paper, a reasonable amount of research notes, laptop computers (without a case), cameras, and items to be considered for addition to the collections. Other items must be left in the lockers or the coat room.
  • After depositing personal items in a locker, library users will turn in a registration card at the Reference Desk in the library. Non-members will pay the daily use fee. Photo identification may be required of any non-member, or member without a membership card.
  • Requests for items not in the reading room must be made on printed call slips. An appointment may be required to view certain items due to their condition or size.
  • The table nearest the reference desk will be reserved for researchers using special collections or for other items as determined by the library staff.
  • Researchers must have clean hands. Gloves may be required for examining unprotected materials.
  • Pages may not be marked with sticky tabs; acid-free paper markers and copy request forms are available from staff.
  • Staff on duty in the reading room will observe researchers diligently, and will bring any apparent violations of the above procedures to the attention of the researcher, or to the attention of the librarian in charge.
  • Photocopies of material will be made by NHHS staff and volunteers only, not by patrons. A limit of 20 pages per volume normally applies. Patrons may make their own copies for a fee from the microfilm reader-printers, or the public printer.
  • Patrons may make their own copies with hand-held cameras for a fee, after signing an agreement and obtaining approval from the librarian on duty.
CLOSING
  • All photocopy requests must be made by 4:45 p.m. Requests made later will normally be filled on the next working day.
  • We reserve the right to examine notes and other materials before researchers leave the reading room.
  • After 4:45 p.m., staff will not retrieve any items from the second floor stacks or the basement.
  • The front door will be locked at 5:00 p.m., and any patrons in the reading room or any other part of the building will be asked to leave at that time.
