Your Vote Counts! Just as presidential candidates take their campaigns to the people, the Museum of New Hampshire History took its show on the road, encouraging people to vote in the 2000 presidential primary and general election. Traveling exhibitions, capturing the excitement of the political process and the importance of voter participation, were placed in eight New Hampshire towns with a history of low voter participation. The displays were on view in early January through the New Hampshire presidential primary on February 1, 2000, and then again in late October through the general election on November 7, 2000. Thanks to Our Sponsors The traveling exhibitions, an innovative effort designed to enhance voter participation, were funded by the First Colebrook Bank, Sanders, a Lockheed Martin Company, Pemigewasset National Bank, and Seabrook Station. Making a Difference This project used an historical perspective to help people understand that by participating in the democratic process they can make a real difference in their communities. The mini-exhibitions stressed the importance of individual votes and explored races where a handful of votes changed history. They also looked at other races in which New Hampshire's vote influenced who stayed in the presidential race and who dropped out. For example, Reagan's showing in the 1984 primary furthered his quest for the presidency. New Hampshire primary results have opened the door to a party nomination, paved the road to the White House, or kept hope alive for more than one underdog. For example, a relative unknown, Jimmy Carter, won the New Hampshire primary in 1976. Exhibition Locations The traveling exhibitions were on view at these locations.
