Internship Opportunities

Limited internship opportunities are available for college and graduate students to work in the Society's library and archives. These are unpaid internships requiring a time commitment of 10 to 15 hours per week. It is the responsibility of the intern to make prior arrangements with their educational institutions if they wish to earn college credit.

Archives and Digitization Internship

Interns in the Society's archives will participate in one or more of the following projects:
  • Research, write, and edit finding aids
  • Digitize manuscripts and photographs
  • Catalog and edit catalog records of archival materials into Minisis collections management software
  • Transcribe Society's collections
  • Write condition reports
  • Provide reference to members, researchers, and the general public
  • Other projects as needed

Library Internship

Interns in the Society's library will participate in one or more of the following projects:
  • Create and edit MARC catalog records in Minisis collections management software
  • Transcribe the Society's collections
  • Provide reference to members, researchers, and the general public
  • Other projects as needed

Preferred Qualifications

The following are preferred qualifications for internship candidates:
  • Pursuing a degree in American studies, American history, museum studies, preservation studies, art and architectural history, library and information science, or a related field
  • Experience working with manuscripts, rare books, or other special collections
  • Cataloging experience, particularly using Minisis collections management software
  • Knowledge of metadata standards used in libraries and archives
