Scope and Content: Photographic print of Main Street in Concord, NH, taken between 1852 and 1867. The caption states, "Main Street between 1852 and 1867 The lofty flag staff or liberty pole in front of the State House yard was erected in August 1852, by the 'Granite Club' at a cost, with the flag of three hundred dollars. The main pole was ninety-three feet in length and the flag pole about sixty. The pole and staff was cut in Dunbarton. The Granite Club was Concord's Democratic organization in favor of Pierce. The rooms of the club were inconvenient for the reception of the legions that made Concord their temporary resting-place; so with the bands of music discoursing the liveliest airs the members of the club led by the president, Anson S. Marshall, marched to the state house park and oratory extended into the night from stand erected for that purpose. (it is seen just to the right of the brick Hill block)."
