Scope and Content: The scrapbooks of John H Bartlett (1869-1952) document his public career and, to a lesser extent, his family history and ties to his birthplace in Sunapee, NH. He pasted in a range of materials from newspaper clippings to photographs. The clippings are mostly about his career; the photographs are of his son, a few relatives, groups with which he worked, colleagues and friends. Sometimes these are explained by typed notes pasted alongside. One of the scrapbooks (number 7) is nothing but interior and exterior photographs of his home on Middle Street in Portsmouth. There is nothing of a private or personal nature here, and the only correspondence is a few letters of congratulation on various achievements. There is no material about his early years, work as a school teacher and principal, attorney, Portsmouth Postmaster, or as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Scrapbook 6 contains materials relating to John Bartlett's brother, Mott L. Bartlett, and a cruise he took in 1957 [after John H. Bartlett's death]. Earlier items in this book may also have belonged to Mott Bartlett. The collection also contains a small number of photographs that arrived at the New Hampshire Historical Society in deteriorating frames. The frames have been removed and the photographs are with the other items or in an oversize drawer.
