Scope and Content: Scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to Rockingham Park in Salem, NH, created by the Rockingham Park Press Office for the year 1977. Most of the newspaper clippings in the scrapbook are from the clipping service New England Newsclip, which includes the name of the publication, the date, publication location, and distribution. Some of the newspapers represented include Foster's Daily Democrat, Central Maine Morning Sentinel, Boston Herald, Patriot Ledger, and Salem Observer. The articles are mostly on happenings at the Park including races, "Cheesie's" picks [Gerry Cheevers, goalie of the Boston Bruins], visitors, and horses or dogs to watch, with a number of articles mentioning jockey Bill "Willie" Shoemaker. A few of the clippings are cartoons. There also are peripheral articles about the park, such as articles on employees (weddings, deaths) and legislation. Beginning in September 1977, some articles begin to discuss the FBI investigation into race fixing. Also included is a 1977 summer meeting summary and 1977 claims.
