Scope and Content: The largest portion of the George Abbot Papers consists of travel accounts of travel in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, Justice of the Peace records, survey notes, and maps created by George Abbot. Also included are survey reports and field books, including one for Contoocook, NH, and one for the Concord, NH, School District No. 4. There are also papers of more than ten persons for whom George Abbot served as estate administrator. The materials in the collection include originals and handwritten copies of items dating from 1730 to 1892. The collection also includes George Abbot's notes on the history of Concord, NH, and vital records collected by Mrs. C.C. [Clarissa Carter] Abbot. George Abbot's memoranda and history includes information on a variety of topics, including Christopher Columbus, Hannah Dustin's capture, a snowstorm of 1717, earthquake of 1727, and "The Dark Day Friday" of May 19, 1780 (see Box 2, folder 13). A small miscellaneous folder contains locks of hair sewn onto paper, correspondence, and a request for a Revolutionary War pension for John Blanchard of Dunbarton, NH. Other materials of interest are the Revolutionary War pension papers of George's father, Ezra Abbot, and thirteen bound volumes that appear to have belonged to George Abbot's son, George, and contain accounts kept from 1865-1892.
