Abstract: Papers, 1804-1849, of John Wingate Weeks consisting primarily of correspondence from Weeks' time in the military, as sheriff of Coos County, and as United States Representative. James Wingate Weeks', 1811-1899, recollections of Lancaster, NH are included in the collection.
Scope and Content: The John Wingate Weeks Papers, 1804-1899, mainly consists of the political correspondence of John Wingate Weeks while he served as Sheriff of Coos County and United States Representative. The collection is divided into two series: Series I. John Wingate Weeks, 1804-1849 and Series II. James Wingate Weeks, 1811-1899. The first series contains the papers of John Wingate Weeks. Early letters discuss the War of 1812. Much of the correspondence from Weeks' terms as United States Representative discusses President Andrew Jackson and his division with Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, and Daniel Webster. John Wingate Weeks was a supporter of President Andrew Jackson, and the collection includes invitations from President Jackson and Martin van Buren. The collection contains letters discussing how people in New Hampshire feel about national politics as well as New Hampshire's role in some political decisions. Series II. James Wingate Weeks includes a bound scrapbook regarding Lancaster, NH that James Wingate Weeks created.
