Scope and Content: The papers of Ruth Louise Thompson document the lives and daily activities of members of a middle class New Hampshire family from the late 18th to the mid-20th centuries. The papers are comprised of letters between Ruth and her parents while she was a student at Colby Junior College (modern day Colby-Sawyer College) in New London, New Hampshire. Also included are two diaries from her first year at Colby. The materials document her activities as a student and also include letters from her family in Manchester and Bradford, New Hampshire. Other correspondence includes the period from 1944 to 1965, when Ruth L. Thompson served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps. It contains letters to and from her parents and relatives living in Manchester. Diaries in the collection were written by several Thompson women; the most complete of Adah Thompson (Ruth Thompson's paternal grandmother), kept between 1882 and 1930. The legal documents in the collection are from the early 19th century and relate to Thompson family members living in Durham, Holderness, and New Hampton, NH. Photographs are of family members; all are identified, but few are dated.
