The journal describes the request of Miss Stevenson for Low to come help at the hospital in Washington, DC, before providing copies of letters from Low to her Aunt Lydia. The letters detail her travels to Washington, including with fellow travelers of the Massachusetts 6th Regiment, as well as her time in the Union Hotel Hospital. This includes information on her patients, their health, their treatment, as well as interactions with other nurses and doctors, such as friction with Dorothea Dix on Low's arrival to assist. She does not include the names of soldiers, referring to them by nicknames or by their regiment, but does note amputations and deaths.
