Abstract: The Sewall D. Tilton Papers contain a Civil War diary, personal letters, and regimental papers for the 11th New Hampshire Regiment, some Grand Army of the Republic and Masons papers, appointments, and a few 17th- and 18th-century deeds.
Scope and Content: The Sewall D. Tilton Papers contain a Civil War diary, personal letters, and regimental papers for the 11th New Hampshire Regiment, as well as some Grand Army of the Republic and Masons papers, appointments, and a few 17th- and 18th-century deeds. The Civil War materials are the most significant part of this collection. There are two diaries covering the period from 1862-1864 and twenty items of correspondence from 1861 to 1865. There are also payrolls and descriptive lists, company orders, etc. The letters and diary mention fighting at Manassas, Memphis, Vicksburg, Maynardville, Knoxville, Chancellorsville, and Petersburg. Miscellaneous papers in this collection consist of correspondence, receipts, a deed, articles, an address at Dr. Peter Y. Fyre's funeral, and shares in the Raymond Manufacturing Company. Other items include a copy of a 1776 Committee of Safety document for the town of Deerfield, NH, as well as some early deeds (1679, 1734, 1763, and 1769) from Exeter and North Hampton, NH.
