Abstract: The White Family papers are composed of correspondence, receipts, bills, deeds, ephemera, membership certificates, broadsides, playbills and a few photographs related to the White Family, primarily of Concord, NH. Nathaniel White was a business man with wide commercial interests, including railroads and express companies, hotels (among other establishments, he owned the Eagle Hotel in Concord, NH), and agriculture. Both he and his wife corresponded with suffragists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as well as abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison; they also supported the temperance movement. The collection contains this correspondence as well as items related to their financial interests. The collection also contains a few items of other family members and of Armenia and Nathaniel's descendants, including some genealogical material.
Scope and Content: The White Family papers are composed of correspondence, receipts, bills, deeds, ephemera, membership certificates, broadsides and handbills and a few photographs related to Nathaniel and Armenia White. There is correspondence from William Lloyd Garrison, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Parker Pillsbury, Mary Livermore and Wendell Phillips about abolition, women's suffrage and the temperance movement. The financial papers mostly document Nathaniel White's real estate and railroad/express route interests. Ephemera in the collection include playbills, programs, broadsides and advertisements, primarily for events happening in Concord, NH. Family and genealogical materials consists of manuscript genealogical lists, printed information about the White Family and the White Farm, and information about descendents Steven and Rose Winship. Except for some early (1840's to 50's) letters from Armenia White's sister and mother-in-law, the collection contains very little personal correspondence among family members.
