Scope and Content: Two letters written from Colonel J.W. Kingman to New Hampshire Governor Nathaniel S. Berry that detail Kingman's experiences and thoughts during the Civil War. Kingman served as a Colonel with the 15th Regiment New Hampshire Volunteers. One letter dates from 1862. In the letter, Kingman describes the conditions of his troops in New York. The conditions are so poor, and he is worried about rebellion. The second letter dates from 1863. Kingman writes from Camp Parapet in Louisiana to describe his feelings about the United States Army Gulf Department and its orders about African Americans. Kingman felt that the Gulf Department was unfairly treating all African Americans as slaves.
