Abstract: The Port Royal Band Books, used by the band during the period 1861-65, contain 21 volumes of manuscript band music from the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment during the Civil War. The band was formed by Gustavus W. Ingalls in July 1861, after receiving executive orders to form a band from New Hampshire Governor Nathaniel S. Berry and was best known as the Port Royal Band due to an extensive duty tour at Port Royal Island, South Carolina.
Scope and Content: The Port Royal Band Books consist of 21 books, created from 1861-1865, of music manuscripts that were played by the Port Royal Band during the Civil War. These handwritten books were used by the band members during the period 1861-65. The books are divided according to instruments into individual folders within 2 boxes. Volume 2 and 3 of the Port Royal Band Books are located on microfilm and there are photocopies of Volume 1 available.
Arrangment: The Port Royal Band Books are organized in order from Book 1 to Book 21.
