Correspondents include George William Curtis, Winston Churchill, John Codman Ropes, Georg Brandes, Charles F. Brown, Clarence Carey, Bayard Taylor, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel P. Banks, and Henry Ward Beecher, among others. A number of these letters were originally found in the volumes of Samuel C. Eastman's library.
