SKU: 9781734386912

Artist, educator, musician, and graphic novelist Marek Bennett continues the saga of Freeman Colby, a New Hampshire school teacher in the Union Army, in volume three of his three-volume comics adaptation of Colby's Civil War memoir preserved in the collection of the Henniker Historical Society. In the first volume, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, published in 2016, young Freeman Colby joined the 39th Massachusetts Regiment in search of “better returns." In the second volume, published in 2019, Colby marches deeper into the war-torn heart of Virginia and just wants to survive the war and return home to his friends and family in New England. In this third volume, while Colby is recovering his health in a Washington, D.C., hospital, the war works unforeseen changes all around him. Bennett's wide-ranging graphic novel series uses Freeman Colby’s actual letters home and other primary sources. In Volumes 2 and 3 readers meet New Hampshire Civil War nurse Sarah Low, and the author used many of Low's wartime letters, preserved at the New Hampshire Historical Society, in his research.
