The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, Vol. 2, 1863
Artist, educator, musician, and graphic novelist Marek Bennett continues the saga of Freeman Colby, a New Hampshire school teacher in the Union Army, in volume 2 of his three-volume comics adaptation of Colby's Civil War memoir preserved in the collection of the Henniker Historical Society. In the first volume, The Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby, published in 2016, young Freeman Colby joined the 39th Massachusetts Regiment in search of “better returns." In volume 2, Colby just wants to survive the war and return home to his friends and family in New England. Marching deeper into the war-torn heart of Virginia, he crosses paths with fellow survivors—widows, poets, volunteer nurses, refugee children, ragged soldiers, and brave mothers striving to deliver their families from slavery. Volume three of the series was published in 2023.
