Description: Cloth Fragment. Cotton ticking. Vertical rectangle. Warp faced left-hand 2/1 twill weave of blue (warp) and white (warp and weft) horizontal stripes. Two selvedge (top and bottom), two raw edges. Three printed paper labels glued to fabric. Top label: "AMOSKEAG M'F'G CO. / FANCY TICKING", with image of Amoskeag Mills. Middle label: four images of medals with text, "EXHIBITION OF THE NATIONS / LONDON / 1851 / EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE / PARIS / 1855 / MEDALS / AWARDED / TO THE / AMOSKEAG MANUFACTURING / COMPANY / FOR SUPERIOR EXCELLENCE / SHEETINGS, BRILLINGS, COTTON-FLANNELS / TICKINGS & DENIMS". Provenance: Purchased by the New Hampshire Historical Society. From the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, Manchester, NH. Ticking was one of the earliest products at Amoskeag, first coming off the looms about 1826. Used as covering for feather beds, pillows, and mattresses. This Amoskeag ticking received medals for excellence at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in London in 1851.
