Description: Bust. Portrait of Daniel Webster. Unglazed porcelain. Half life-size bust of man draped in classical manner, head and shoulders. Head turned slightly to subject's left; back and sides hollowed below shoulders; attached to separate circular base, 6" in diameter, using brass nut, bolt, and washer. Sober mien, curly hair combed forward in Roman manner, high forehead, heavy eyebrows, firm mouth and chin. Pupils and iris of eyes not defined. Inscribed on reverse in hollow area: "J.E. King sc/Pullished {sic} June 1 1853", in script below which is impressed mark: "Copeland", in upper case letters. On round pedestal base. The original on which Copeland's Parian version was based seems to have been by John Crookshanks King (1806-1882) of Boston, who is known to have executed at least two marble busts of Webster. The fact that "published" is misspelled in the Parian inscription suggests that the sculptor's middle initial may also be given incorrectly.
