Description: Landscape painting, In the Notch, by John White Allen Scott (1815-1907), 1857. Oil on canvas. A view of Crawford Notch. Grassy sloping hill in foreground; a broken and a standing birch tree right; rocks on left. Trees surround small body of water in middle ground. Two figures in a boat; one figure is standing and wearing red. Field with house and outbuilding in left middle ground. Forests and mountains in background. Signed lower right: "J.W.A. Scott / 1857". Gilded gesso over wood frame with fruit and floral exterior; reeded cove.

Provenance: This painting was owned by Ellen D. Hill (1828-1917) of Concord, NH, the daughter of coach manufacturer Lewis Downing and wife of dry goods merchant Joseph C. A. Hill (1820-1901). Ellen Hill acquired this and other works of art, including prints and sculpture, to decorate her home during the mid 19th century.
