Description: Presentation Basket. Silverplated, over brass and other base metals. Oval shaped basket with swinging handle, and oval pedestal base. Basket body has stamped floral decoration on interior surface. Center of basket is slightly raised in a sun burst pattern. Edging of basket decorated with gadrooning and dots. Strap handle attached with two pin hinges, and decorated with bands of reeding and leaves. Solder mark on center of handle. Band of gadrooning and dots around pedestal base. Engraved on exterior of bowl in upper and lower case script letters, "Presented by the / Members of the Senate / to / J.O.Adams. / July 3. 1868" (for James Osgood Adams). Stamped on the bottom of the basket in upper case Roman letters in a circle, "MERIDEN BRIT'A CO". Stamped across maker's mark is "1869".

Provenance: Basket with presentation inscription to James Osgood Adams (1818-1887), from the Senate, 1868. Adams was the N.H. State Printer in the 1870s. James Osgood Adams's brother, Ezra Eastman Adams (1813-1871; b. Concord NH), was grandfather of donor, Frances Gurley Adams Millar (1889-; b. Washington, D.C.).
