Description: Basket. Manufactured by the Meriden Britannia Company, Meriden, CT; 1875-1890. Silver-plated over brass and other basemetals. Round basket with swinging handle and round pedestal base. Basket is shallow with raised center. Stamped design on interior includes leaves and vines. Engraved in center is the letter, "W", in upper case black lettering. Wire handle attached with two pin hinges. At center of handle are two medallions with the profile of Liberty; on ends opposite the handle hinges are two round balls soldered to basket rim. Pedestal base is undecorated. Stamped or cast on bottom of pedestal is a scale within a shield mark, with the words in uppercase sans-serif letters, "MERIDEN / B. COMPANY" (for Meriden Britannia company). Stamped twice near makers mark is the number "17".
