Description: Military uniform coat. Worn by General Benjamin Pierce (1757-1839), Hillsborough, NH; c. 1785. Navy blue wool with wide, standing collar of pale yellow wool, sides of front with same material. 2.1" band with ten flat brass buttons. Cutaway front tails at back, plaited below waist and held with large brass buttons, top and bottom. Flat pockets side to back lined with tan linen. Long narrow sleeves with yellow cuffs with two small, flat brass buttons with button holes and two larger buttons for decoration. Lined with dark blue calamanco except, for back which is lined with tan linen burlap to waist. Two small flat buttons at shoulder and small cord loops.

Provenance: Worn by General Benjamin Pierce (1757-1839) at the review of the Hillsborough County company of the New Hampshire State Militia at Amherst, after its first organization in 1785. Donated in 1841 by his son, Franklin Pierce (1804-1869).
