Description: Postmark hand stamp, Milton Mills, NH, set for December 16, 1905. Used at Asa Fox & Son general store/post office. Steel head with round cylinder 1.15" diam. Raised cast lettering around perimeter of cylinder head: "MILTON MILLS / N.H." Center of cylinder head has four removable pieces of steel type: "DEC / 16 / 8 AM / 1905". Thumb screw on side of cylinder for holding type in place. Head includes serrated elliptical cancellation stamp, 1.0" x 0.5", attached to head with screw. Turned wooden handle, 1.4" diam. x 3.5" long. Brass collar between head and handle.

Provenance: Used at Asa Fox & Son general mercantile store and post office, operated by Asa Fox (1809-1887) and his son Elbridge Wood Fox (1834-1912) in Milton Mills, NH. After death of Asa Fox, store was run by Elbridge W. Fox and his son, Everett F. Fox (1856-1927).

Came with large collection of papers of Helen Gertrude (Fox) Carmichael (donor's mother) and Elbridge Wood Fox (donor's great-grandfather), including letters, diaries, account books, photographs, and ephemera.

Margaret Emerson died 06/07/2005.
