Description: Wooden box for chocolate, from Asa Fox & Son general store, Milton Mills, NH. One end bears colored printed label: "French SWEET / CHOCOLATE / CINQUIEME / 8585 / Made By Josiah Webb & Co. Milton, Mass." Label has red and faded green colors and floral design. Finger joints. Removable sliding cover with two finger notches. Cover is stamped "6 lbs" in black ink. Pencil inscription on cover: "Diaries - Elbridge W. Fox " with list of years 1887-1893 (the box was used to hold the diaries). Pencil inscription on other end of box: "Ledger Heads". Pencil inscription on side of box: "Diaries - 1887-189"; and on bottom: "OL" and "NSD".

Provenance: Used at Asa Fox & Son general mercantile store and post office, operated by Asa Fox (d. 1887) and his son Elbridge Wood Fox (b. 1834) in Milton Mills, NH. After death of Asa Fox, store was run by Elbridge W. Fox and his son, Everett F. Fox (1856-1927).
Came with large collection of papers of Helen Gertrude (Fox) Carmichael (donor's mother) and Elbridge Wood Fox (donor's great-grandfather), including letters, diaries, account books, photographs, and ephemera.
Margaret Emerson died 06/07/2005.
