Description: In 1952, the spirited campaign waged in New Hampshire's Democratic primary by Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee against President Harry S. Truman attracted considerable national attention. Kefauver was initially given little chance of winning, but he took his campaign directly to the voters, in a folksy, personal manner. He also secured the endorsement of many prominent Democrats. He surprised many observers when all of his candidates for delegates won, and he also won the presidential preference portion of the primary by a 5 to 4 margin. A few weeks later Truman, who had dismissed presidential primaries as so much "eyewash," announced that he was not a candidate for his party's nomination.
