1829 Born in Birmingham, England

1844 Immigrated to America with his family; employed as a decorative painter

1853 Studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; won silver medal at the Maryland Institute, Baltimore

1854 First painted the White Mountains

1855 Moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts

1861 Moved to San Francisco, California

1865 Won first prize at the San Francisco Art-Union

1866 Studied in Paris with the German artist Paul Meyerheim

1867–72 Worked in Boston

1871 First exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum

1872 Became a member of the Boston Art Club; returned to San Francisco

1874 Helped found the California School of Design, San Francisco

1876 Won gold medal, U.S. Centennial Exposition, Philadelphia

1884 Won medal at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

1908 Died in Raymond, California
